Summer reading doesn’t have to mean one particular kind of book. Sometimes you want something light enough to read beside the pool. Sometimes vacation is exactly when you finally have time for the sweeping historical novel you’ve been saving. And sometimes the best summer book is simply the one that makes you say, I’ll read one more chapter until suddenly it’s much later than you intended.
These are all books I’ve actually read — and loved.

People We Meet on Vacation
A natural summer pick, with travel, friendship, romance and the kind of easy momentum that makes it especially good for vacation. It’s warm and entertaining without requiring you to keep track of a complicated plot — exactly the sort of book I want when I’m reading somewhere other than my usual chair.

The Unhoneymooners
A Hawaii honeymoon, two people who can barely stand each other, and one very inconvenient reason they have to pretend they’re newlyweds. It’s funny, fast-moving and exactly the kind of book that feels right tucked into a beach or pool bag.
Read this if: You want a light, entertaining vacation read with banter, romance and an enemies-to-lovers setup.

Remarkably Bright Creatures
One of those books that is difficult to describe without making it sound quirkier than it actually feels. Yes, there is an extraordinarily observant octopus. But at its heart, this is a warm story about loneliness, connection, grief and the unexpected ways people find one another. It’s gentle without being boring and emotional without becoming relentlessly sad.

The Correspondent
A quiet book that completely won me over. Told through letters, it gradually reveals a life, its relationships and all the things that can be difficult to say directly. This isn’t the book I’d choose when I want a fast thriller. It’s the one I’d choose when I have an uninterrupted afternoon and want to settle into something thoughtful and beautifully human.

The Frozen River
Historical fiction is always going to have a place on my summer reading list, and this is exactly the kind I love: an immersive setting, a compelling woman at the center of the story and enough mystery to keep the pages moving. Set in late-1700s Maine and inspired by a real midwife, it combines historical detail with a story that reads almost like a mystery.

The Alice Network
Espionage, female spies and two timelines connected by secrets left behind by war. This has the scope of a substantial historical novel but enough suspense and intrigue to make it easy to keep reading.

The Last Mrs. Parrish
This is exactly the kind of thriller that belongs in a summer stack: wealthy families, envy, secrets and a woman determined to work her way into someone else’s seemingly perfect life. It’s deliciously easy to keep reading because just when you think you understand what’s happening, the story gives you another reason to question it.
Read this if: You want a twisty, slightly soapy thriller to devour by the pool or on vacation.

Broken Country
Love, loss, secrets and choices from the past collide in a story that sits somewhere between literary fiction, mystery and romance. It has the emotional pull of a character-driven novel but enough unanswered questions to keep you turning pages.

Beartown
Don’t let the hockey setting convince you this is a sports book. Hockey matters, but the story is really about a small community, loyalty, family, friendship and what happens when doing the right thing threatens something a town desperately wants to protect. It is heavier than most books we’d call a “summer read,” but summer is also when I sometimes have the most time to give a book like this the attention it deserves.
Read this if: You want unforgettable characters and don’t mind a book with some emotional weight.
